Google Closing Android 8 and Go Edition in 2018

Modern technologies move forward very fast. On 1st of April 20018 Google Inc. stopped Google Mobile Services Certification for all Android 7.0/7.1 (Nougat) based devices so now only Android 8.0/8.1 (Oreo) or Android Go Edition can pass official GMS tests. However, after last week’s announcements, we already can add the word STILL to the existing GMS Certification process.

According to the latest declarations, Android 8.0/8.1, and Android Go Edition also will be closed at the end of this year. The latest day of approval of Oreo (and its versions) based devices is 31st of December 2018. From the 1st of January 2019, Google will only approve gadgets based on the 9th version of OS Android – Android P. Since the 1st day of 2019, Android 8.0/8.1, Android Go Edition (and earlier versions) devices will be available only for updates.

Based on our previous experience, we expect that 3rd Party laboratories, authorized by Google will stop to accept devices 14 days before the deadline announced above. Take into account Christmas Holidays and New Year rush, the real deadline for GMS Certification of Android 8.0/8.1/Android Go Edition based gadgets (as we expect) will be moved to the 1st of December, 2018.

Take into account the information above, we highly recommend to prepare your Android 8.0/8.1 and Android Go based products for the GMS Certification in advance and start the GMS process not later than October of 2018. Let us remind you that the GMS certification can last about 30 days but the exact term of approval period depends on the Google’s special requirements during the software confirmation.
