GMS Certification for Android 10 Based Devices

Flame Group SE share the latest information about Google Mobile Services (Google GMS) Certification for Android 10.
Since February 1st, 2020 brands can certify devices based on Android 10 only. Earlier Android versions (as Pie, Oreo and others) are not available for GMS Certification. Devices based on Android 9 and earlier versions only can be certified as none-GMS devices (so, all the Google applications should be removed).
It is not easy to pass Google Mobile Services Certification following requirements for Android 10; some tests are more complicated compared to GMS of the previous Android releases. By this article, you will meet with all mandatory GMS tests for Android 10 and with the latest test utilities.

Mandatory Google Mobile Certification Tests
GMS Certification for Android 10 based devices includes the mandatory tests below:
•       Android Compatibility Tests (CTS Tests). With the help of CTS tests, developers can validate the device’s software and hardware components. The latest CTS Utility version on the moment of publication is 10.0_R3.
•       Compatibility Test Suite Verifier (CTS Verifier) tests - tool for the manual testing of the camera, sensors, touchscreen, audio quality, etc.
•       GMS Test Suite (GTS). GTS ensures that Google Mobile applications are compatible with the device. The latest GTS version at the time of publication is 7.0_R4.
•       Vendor Test (VTS Tests). VTS provides extensive new functionality for Android testing and promotes a test-driven development process. The latest VTS version at the time of publication is 10.0_R3.
Please note that Google does not accept the test passed by lower utility versions. CTS tests and CTS Verifier are public free of charge suites which are available for download in Android Open Source Project - https://source.android.com/compatibility/cts/; GTS and VTS suites are available for Google Authorized partners only.

Google Mobile Services Package and Security Patch
Following Google Mobile Services regulations, GMS software should be tested with the latest available Google Mobile Services Package (GMS Package) and Security Patch. GMS Package and Security Patch are regularly updated, and developers are strictly controlled if the developers implemented the latest version. According to Google’s policy, customers should possess the latest versions of utilities and have the maximum protection of the device from the box. That is why software with expired GMS Package and Security Patch declines from the beginning.

Compatibility Definition
Compatibility Definition document (CDD) enumerates the requirements that must be met for devices to be compatible with Android 10. To be considered compatible with Android 10 device implementations must fulfil the requirements presented in Compatibility Definition including any documents incorporated via reference.
All the Android device types, the additional requirements and recommendations applicable for each device type are described in details by that document. For example, the Android Handheld device should have a power source that provides mobility (same to a battery); have a physical diagonal screen size in the range of 2.5 to 8 inches.
Other requirements are described in details by the latest version of CDD.

Mobile Applications Distribution Agreement (MADA)
Some companies that passed Google’s requirements and signed an official Mobile Application Distribution Agreement (MADA) with Google can develop and certify Android 10 software by themselves. GMS certification manages by the authorized 3rd party laboratories. Companies can sign an agreement and manage GMS manually. The problem is own MADA connected with Google’s high demands to the minimum quantity of the launched Android-based devices during the target period. As a rule, the corporation is not interested in brands that are not able to launch less than 1 000 000 – 2 000 000 devices per year.
Some companies that are not able to get MADA can use MADA of motherboards manufacturers. This way has some drawbacks because the certification process is out of control and available only for some types of motherboards. Moreover, motherboards manufacturers are not able to manage some projects at the same time.
Companies that have no their own MADA and are not able to use MADA of their device manufacturer can also get the official GMS certification. Specialists of Flame Group are always ready to propose some solutions to get the official GMS certification. Everything starts with deep hardware & software analysis. After analysis, we will confirm if your device can pass the GMS and run all the tests. We can move forward in case of a positive confirmation.
