As we informed since 2016 Google regularly update versions of the Android Operating System and closing older Android OS versions for the GMS Certification. According to Google LLC information, such policy help to promote new technologies development, increase electronic device stability and performance, and enlarge customers’ satisfaction.
From January 1, 2019, Google closed GMS Certification for Android 8 Oreo. Android Oreo Go edition (which used for entry-level devices with the memory 1+8 GB or lower) should be closed for the GMS later – from 1 March of 2019. Source codes for Android 9 (Pie) and Android Pie Go Edition were published in advance.
However, over the last few weeks, Google got some reports from brands and manufacturers that there may be performance regressions in the Android 9 (Pie) platform code (AOSP) for Android Go.
After internal testing, and extended discussions with some of the manufacturers’ engineering teams, Google understood these regressions stem from some of the graphics improvements developers made for the higher end devices. Google is beefing up their steps to ensure such performance impacting changes are caught well in advance on the low-end devices in the future Android releases. As such, Google will be extending the GMS approval window for Android Go on Android 8 (Oreo) to October 31, 2019.
So revised GMS approval window looking as below:
- GMS Certification for Android 8 & 8.1 Oreo for devices with RAM 2GB and higher ALREADY CLOSED. For hi-end, now brands are only able to certify devices based on Android 9 (Pie).
- GMS approval window for Android Go on Android 8 Oreo (for devices with RAM 1GB and lower) will be extending to October 31, 2019.
Manufacturers who were not able to certify their devices with RAM memory 2GB or higher before the Android Oreo deadline also can try to finish the process of the official GMS certification. Please, turn to our team for the detailed explanation.
